Rush no more

It's interesting how a good movie can impact you in many ways. A couple of weeks ago, I watched the movie Rush, and a dialogue by Niki Lauda got me thinking. He repeatedly says:
I signed up for 20% risk, and I will take no more.

Admittedly, most of us do not drive Formula-1 cars, but we have our own share of this 20% risk: bad roads, heavy rains or fog, rash or incompetent drivers, or simply bad luck. Problem is, we often are willing to take more risks than is necessary.

In my case, I was OK with leaving a few minutes later for the railway station because I knew I could make up for it on the road.
I was OK with Aditi sleeping a few minutes more because I could drive just a little bit faster and still make it on time to school.

The movie made me realize this is not acceptable. Leave early for the station. Wake up the kiddo at a proper time. And, in case there are any unforeseen problems, be willing to arrive a bit late.

There's no heroism in taking on 'challenges' that are perfectly avoidable.

Nagpur and Kolhapur

I need to avoid reading books while traveling.

During the Kolhapur- Belgaum bus journey, I am reading this book, and Karnataka bus conductor comes, saying "ticket, ticket".
I absentmindedly pass him a couple of 100/- notes, say "Nagpur" and continue reading.

Confused, he again asks me where. And I repeat, a bit loud and clear, NAGPUR.

Now the passengers are looking at me, the conductor is looking at me, and am still in the book. So he taps me on the shoulder and says,
"नाSSगपुरा?? रांSSग बस्स!"
( You going to Nagpur? You're in the wrong bus!)

Of books... Old and new

"So...What's the latest book you're reading?"
Me: "Nothing at the moment.... Planning to read Rise and fall of Adolf Hitler."
"Acha... new book?"
Me: "Ah, no... Published way back in the 1960s."
"Why are you reading such an old book?"
"I don't know... Perhaps because it's good?"

This is not an imaginary conversation; it happens often. How can 'Old' or 'New' be the criteria to choose a book to read? It's like rushing to watch a movie only because it's just released.

Goodbye, Windows Mobile... Hello, Android!

Last Friday, with a heavy heart I powered down my Windows Phone, and fired up a device, that just three months ago I wouldn't have dreamt of... an Android Phone.
And I blame Microsoft for this.
I have been using Windows-based mobiles since 2011... Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1 and then Windows 10. For almost 7 years we shared a peaceful co-existence. The apps were few, but sufficient.
Last December, the internal memory on Lumia device was depleting rapidly, and it was time for an upgrade. That's when the sad state of Windows Mobile ecosystem became evident to me. Microsoft itself seems to have given up on the mobile platform. There are no devices in sub-20k range. There's no support for UPI. Delayed updates to frequently used apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook.
Other power users of Windows Mobile such as Rohit Bhargav also suggested me not to continue with it. Thus began a search for an alternative.
Apple iPhone was never an option due to its high price range and the closed ecosystem. I considered BlackBerry for a very short time before settling on Android. Debashish Deshmukh, who happens to be the living encyclopedia of mobile devices in market spent hours coaching me on various models -- Samsung, Honor, and many more. He had recommended RedMi Note 4 as the best value-for-money mobile but I didn't wish to go through the hassle of waiting for the flash sales and opted for Moto G5 Plus.
Experience so far has been good; but it remains to be seen if I would overcome missing the following features of Windows Mobile:
Reliability: For the past 7 years that I have been using Windows Mobile on Lumia devices, not even once did I have to visit the store for any hardware repairs or software glitches. Let's see how Android devices fare in that comparison.
Metro UI: I still believe Metro UI is ideal for phones.
MS-Office tools: These are supposedly equally good on Android if not even better.
To Do Prime: My favourite to-do list app, it's not available on Android and am looking for its alternative.
OneNote: Not sure if it's available for Android. Evernote, perhaps?
I will continue to monitor the Windows Mobile space to see if Microsoft ever gets serious about it. Untill then, Goodbye, Windows Mobile... Hello, Android!

What if....

There are some folks -- and that definitely includes me -- who keep fretting over a series of "What if -" questions in their minds. "What if the train doesn't reach on time?" What if the machine hangs during my presentation?" What if this, what if that...
This can be frustrating, not only for the person but also those around him/her.
So, what I do is... Move on from "What if X happens?" to "What will I do if X happens?" This changes the whole perspective. If the train doesn't reach on time? Here are the people I should notify. If the machine hangs? Here are the important points from the presentation that I ought to memorize. and so on.
Rather than being paralyzed by fear and anxiety about what all things might go wrong, you start chalking out contingency plans and alternate approaches. It's fun.

Words matter!

Sant Tukaram has beautifully captured the importance of words... Every word of it rings true.

Why do people watch a movie multiple times?

Why do people watch a movie gazillion times?
Really liked a movie and want to see it a couple more times? Sure. Want to enjoy it again with different sets of friends/family/relatives? Definitely. Feel like watching it again few more times after gaps of some years? Of course.

But.. Watching HAHK 17 times?
Madhumati 25 times?
And, watching DDLJ a freaking FORTY ONE times?

These are actual numbers shared by real people. Exasperated, I ask: "Pray tell me what changes? The script? The acting?" And they are like, "No! Nothing changes, but... You won't understand."

Perhaps. I don't understand that. But what I do understand is this: 3 hours x 40 times = 120 hours.

Folks, you spent five day-nights of your life watching the same thing over and over... And, you're not gonna get those back again.

Sales drive

I always make it a point to read the pamphlets/brochures that come along with the newspapers; not for the products they advertise but because of the awesome language they use. Here are some choice examples of amenities shown in various housing schemes.

  • First Come First Possessed (!)
  • Freedom from pollution, air and water. (poor souls)
  • Members Clubbing House (the place where folks club each other?)
  • Lawn 70000 sq ft (shown in the list of individual amenities for each flat)
  • Full sunlight during day (Aww... Not during night?)
  • Children Parking (What? Ah, they meant playground/park.)
  • Entry gate light (What this means, someone enlighten me please)
  • 360 degree lake view (is this building right in the middle of a lake?)
  • CCTV camera for each room (each and every room?!)
  • Fiance from nationalized bank guaranteed (Wow!)

Relativity!

Einstein's theories of relativity (special and general) are often cited as examples of something that's extremely complex; but there's yet another, more complicated form of 'relativity' that makes me apprehensive about attending marriages and other social functions. I always run into someone who takes pleasure in conducting interrogation sessions by linking family genealogies.

"So you are related to Girish.... That makes you cousin of my sister's niece. Right? Arre, atleast do you know that your father is related to my uncle's younger cousin? अरे, तुझी मावशी म्हणजे आमचे साडू आहेत ना त्यांची मोठी सून. ...."

When it comes to decipering relations, I am dumber than anyone else. It is only with tuition from Arti that I can differentiate between a भाची and a पुतणी and am yet to learn by-heart the chemistry between a जाऊ and नणंद. And, these relations are not symmetric. For example , if Gauri is my आत्तेबहीण then conversely I should be Gauri's आत्तेभाऊ, right ? No! I happen to be her मामेभाऊ!!

B. Sc.

He was depressed.
Blame it on the pathetically low number of engineering colleges in his small state, or the meager of seats available for his category, the fact remained that he would have to forgo his dream of pursuing computer engineering. His worried parents sent him to meet his high school headmaster.

Walking towards the cabin, he avoided looking at the Roll of Honour on the wall. It featured his name in the list of Meritorious students of SSC... Thinking about it made him even more guilty.

"Sit down, it's good to see you after a long time," welcomed the elderly headmaster.
"Couldn't make it to engineering, sir," said the boy, "Have enrolled for B.Sc. I am useless, totally ashamed of myself."

"Son," said the kind teacher, "I am also a B. Sc... So, I guess you think am useless, and are ashamed of me as well?"

When the boy left the cabin a short while later, he was determined to value knowledge as something over and above just a degree... And he still does.

Life in a.... Park

Go to any public park, and you'll see the following default entities:

  • Overprotective parents: Usually seen as a couple. While their kids are willing to adjust and take turns at the sportsware, these parents are like "no beta, don't leave your place, let others wait."
  •  Mobile Moms: Always deep into their smartphones or talking on phone. Totally oblivious to current location of their kid in the park.
  •  Middle-aged house wives: Seen as a bunch, always gossiping about husband, saas, and stuff. You don't even have to make an effort to listen to them; their sound waves are all pervasive.
  •  Health freaks: Running on jogging tracks, looking condescendingly at us pot-bellied creatures.
  •  Senior citizens: Another bunch, discussing what Modi or Obama need to do and passing judgments on the folks in the park. They usually have a 'preferred bench' in the park.

Good morning!

As a kid, my morning routine was rather messy, doing things haphazardly, out of sequence, wasting the time. Very inefficient.
Then, I read about boot loader, the program that loads operating system when you start up the machine. It performs many tasks in an elegant sequence, an orchestra of files being executed in an optimal manner. I was fascinated to see a machine working so logically and rather embarrassed about my own booting up process every morning.
Since then, for the last 20+ years, I have tried to stick to what works best for me. Of course, marriage has added some subroutines like PREPARE TEA, but otherwise it remains unchanged.

A case against 'short and sweet'

The current trend of excessive fondness for 'short and sweet' content is quite disturbing. As soon as people see four or more lines of text, they start frowning and squirming.
Don't get me wrong: Brevity is good, but in its proper place. Excessive verbiage must be avoided. However, there's something wrong when witty one-liners start replacing a paragraph of meaningful thoughts. This seems indicative of shorter attention spans.
Shakespeare didn't become The Great Bard by spewing out catchy quotes; he had to write reams and reams of poems, sonnets and plays. Einstein didn't become The Genius of 20th Century by simply declaring E=mc^2 and walking away; he had to solve pages and pages of differential equations and tensor calculus to prove his theories. Tim Berners-Lee didn't invent the World Wide Web by casually typing WWW one fine morning; he had to support it with a markup language and protocol specifications and stuff.
As a junior software programmer, you need to hammer out scrollbars and scrollbars of code before you get to become a CTO or possibly even a CEO where you can demand one-page executive summary.
You can get away with a "Hey hi, what's up, b'bye", and still call it 'being social'… But the real conversation happens when both the parties have the depth and breadth to carry on the dialog beyond that.
TLDR: If you want to do some real reading or get some actual work done, then 'short and sweet' is probably not the best approach to go about it.

In the company of Mozart, Beethoven and Bach

With Western classical music (instrumentals), I didn't know where to begin. When in doubt, choose Mozart. So I did, with a sprinkling of Beethoven, Bach and Chopin in between.
After listening to a few pieces, surprisingly there was a feeling of déjà vu… I had heard this before!

Realization dawned later, while watching cartoons with little Aditi… The background score for many Tom & Jerry episodes is Western Classical music! No wonder it sounds familiar.
And, the splendid signature tune of Titan Watches is Mozart's  Symphony No. 25 in G minor.

I haven't yet delved deep into Western classical (instrumental) music, but there are some clear trends.

For peppy, upbeat music, Vivaldi and most of Mozart do the trick.

For calmness and tranquillity, choose Schubert.

If you are crazy for mathematical rigidity and structure, Bach is for you.

For a stormy, angry mood, Beethoven is good.

But when you want something fiery & explosive, something that will send an adrenaline surge through your body… Ride of Valkyries by Wagner takes the honours.

[Poem] तुमचं आयुष्य तुमच्या हातात...

Today morning while driving to office, I saw a slogan "तुमचं आयुष्य तुमच्या हातात" on an auto-rickshaw. It inspired a a few verses in me, sharing them here.

A gem from Sahir....

I have always wondered why old film songs are more dearer than recent ones.  The answer came when reading lyrics written by Sahir Ludhiyanwi… They are good poetry first, film songs later.

Here's an expressive non-film ghazal from Sahir…

A bus ride

I dreamt that I am travelling in a red ST bus (State Transport bus of Maharashtra), sitting in the last row, just behind the door. It is early morning, around 6 AM and it is raining heavily. The bus stops at a village stop.

Matt Damon gets in the bus.
He is wearing goggles, white shirt and jeans, and sits next to me. Am all excited: MATT DAMON!
We take a selfie... Using his phone.

And then I wake up, wishing that we had taken selfie using my phone so that I could have posted it here.

Words of Fire: A tribute to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was once asked:
What would you like to be remembered as: A renowned scientist, a successful technocrat or a popular president of India?
His answer: A good teacher.

It was a fitting finale to a lifetime of accomplishments that he passed away doing what he loved: Teaching to students.

Today on Guru Pournima day ("Teachers' Days" in Indian culture), here's my tribute to Dr Kalam sir: A collection of inspirational and enlightening passages from his autobiography "Wings of Fire."

May his soul rest in peace; and may his words continue to guide and motivate us.

WINGS OF FIRE---by APJ ABDUL KALAM
----------------------

  • The difference between an energetic and a confused person is the way their minds handle their experiences.

  • We need our difficulties because they are necessary to enjoy success.
Accept your destiny and go ahead with your life. Forget the failure; it was essential to lead you to your destined path. Search for your true purpose of your existence.

  • Anyone who has taken the responsibility to lead a team can be successful only if he is sufficiently intelligent and powerful in his own right to become a person to reckon with. This is also the path to individual success in life. What can one do to strengthen oneself ?
First , by building your own education and skills. Knowledge is a tangible asset, the most important tool in your work. You must have the most up-to-date information. A leader should keep abreast of all that is happening around him. To lead, is to engage in continuing education.
Second, develop a passion for personal responsibility. Work for the things you believe in.

  • All of us carry some sort of super-intelligence within us. Let it be stimulated to enable us to examine our deepest thoughts, desires and beliefs.
Work as hard as you can at something that presents a challenge and is approved by your heart.

  • The trouble is that we often merely analyse life instead of dealing with it. People dissect their failures for causes and effects , but seldom deal with them and gain experience to master them and thereby avoid their recurrence.
This is my belief: thru difficulties and problems, God gives us the opportunity to grow. So, when your hopes and dreams and goals are dashed, search among the wreckage, you may find a golden opportunity hidden in the ruins.

  • One of the main driving forces is: Motive. It is the force which is internal to the individual and forms the basis of his behaviour in the work environment. Most people posses a strong drive for growth, competence, and self-actualization. The problem is the lack of a work-environment that stimulates and permits them to give a full expression to this drive.

  • Most of the time, communication gets confused with conversation. In fact , the two are distinctly different. A conversation full of pleasantries is often devoid of any useful information, whereas the communication is meant only for the exchange of information.
  • Your willingness to invest your own inner resources to invest your life , esp. your imagination, will bring you success. When you undertake a task from your own uniquely individual standpoint , you will become a person.

A basic aspect of a person’s working style is how he plans and organizes tasks.
  • At one extreme end is the meticulous planner, who carefully spells out each step before making any move. With a sharp eye for what can possibly go wrong, he tries to cover all contigencies. At the other end is the fast mover, who weaves and dodges without a plan. Inspired by an idea, the fast mover is always ready for action.
  • Another aspect of a person's working style is control- the energy and attention devoted to ensuring that things happen in a certain way. At one extreme is the tight controller, a strict administrator with frequent checkpoints. Rules and policies are to be followed with religious fervor. At the opposite end are those who move with freedom and flexibility. They have little patience for bureaucracy.

To succeed in your mission, you must have single-minded devotion to your goal. Such individuals are called "workaholics". The term is misleading because it implies a pathological condition or an illness. If I do that which I desire more than anything else in the world and which makes me happy, such work can never be an aberration.

Total commitment is a crucial quality for those who want to reach the very top of their profession. The desire to work at optimum capacity leaves hardly any room for anything else. Total commitment is the common denominator among all successful men and women.

FLOW is a sensation we experience when we act with total involvment. There is no hurry, there are no distracting demands. The past and future disapear. So does the distinction between self and activity.

  • Everything solid contains great space within and everything stationary contains great movements within. It is as though as the great dance of Shiva is being performed on Earth during every moment of our existence.

  • Desire , when it stems from the heart and the spirit, when it is pure and intense, possesses awesome electromagnetic energy. This energy is released into the space each night , as the mind falls to sleep. Each morning it returns to the conscious state reinforced with the cosmic currents. That which has been imaged will be surely and certainly be manifested. You can rely, young man, upon this ageless promise as surely as you can rely upon the eternally unbroken promise of sunrise.

As the process of confronting and solving problems often requires hard work and is painful, we have endless procrastination. Actually, problems can be the cutting edge that actually distinguishes between the success and the failure. They draw out innate courage and wisdom.

  • Performance dimensions are factors that lead to creation. They go beyond the competencies such as skills and knowledge of a person. They exist at various levels of human personality. At behavioural level, the outermost ring, we can observe skills and measure knowledge. Social roles and self-image form the intermediate level. Motives and traits exist at the core level. If we can identify those performance dimensions that are most highly co-related, with a job, we can use them for outstanding performance.

  • The kingdom of God is within you, in the form of internal power  to help you achieve your goals and realize your dreams. There are many different types and levels that turn this internal power reaction critical. Sometimes, when we are ready , the gentlest contacts with him fill us with insight and wisdom. This could come from an encounter with another person, from a word, a question, a gesture , or even a look. It could come thru a book , a conversation, a line from a poem , or the mere sight of a picture. Without the slightest warning , something new breaks into your life and a secret decision is taken, a decision that you may be completely unconscious of , to start with.
Each individual creature on this beautiful planet is created by God to fulfill a particular role. Whatever we achieve, is through His help and as an expression of His will. We are all born with a divine fire within us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness.

Einstein vs Quantum physicists

Would the Moon exist if there was no one to see it?
Would a falling tree make a sound if there was no one to hear it?

Does reality have a separate existence or does it require presence of an observer?

Einstein believed that the Moon would still exist and the falling tree would still make a sound regardless of whether there was anyone around.

Quantum physicists disagree. According to them, reality has no separate existence and it is only a manifestation of measurement by an observer.

No Internet, No Birthday wishes....

An office colleague of mine looked depressed. Upon inquiry, she informed it was the birthday of her best friend and her mobile data connection being down, she wasn't able to message him on WhatsApp or wish him on Facebook.

I said, almost jokingly, "Well, you could consider calling him." And she exclaimed, "Oh yes, I can do that!"

So, she called and they talked happily after.

It seems for many of us the birthday wishes have been reduced to just a WhatsApp message or a Facebook post.
