Fermi Paradox

 Wiki surfing (म्हणजे विकिपीडियावर एका विषयातून दुसऱ्या विषयावर स्वैर संचार) करत असताना Fermi Paradox बद्दल वाचत होतो, अतिशय interesting विषय आहे.

1. विश्वात इतरत्र जीवसृष्टी आहे का?  की आपण एकटेच आहोत?
2. इतरत्र जीवसृष्टी असेल तर आपला संपर्क का होत नाही?

या दोन महत्वाच्या प्रश्नांची संभाव्य उत्तरे पाहुयात.

आपल्या आकाशगंगेत जवळपास ५०० अब्ज तारे आहेत. ज्ञात विश्वात जवळपास तितक्याच दीर्घिका आहेत. शास्त्रज्ञांच्या मते यांत पृथ्वीसारखी संरचना असणारे १०० अब्ज अब्ज ग्रह असतील. यापैकी एकाही ग्रहावर सजीव सृष्टी निर्माण झाली नसेल असे मानणे अवघड आहे. 

जर सजीव आहेत असे मानले तर प्रश्न पडतो की आपला त्यांच्याशी संपर्क का होत नसावा... याची अनेक कारणे असू शकतात. 

१. अनेक दूरस्थ ग्रहांवर जीवसृष्टी असेलही पण कदाचित ती अतिशय अप्रगत (microbes, bugs वगैरे) असेल. अथवा, प्रगत असली तरी जमिनीखाली अथवा पाण्याखाली वसलेली असल्याने त्यांच्याकडे अंतराळात संपर्क साधायचे तंत्रज्ञान नसेल.

२. अनेक शास्त्रज्ञ "ग्रेट फिल्टर" ही थिअरी मानतात. त्यांच्या मते मुळात "जीव" निर्माण होणे हीच एक अतिदुर्मिळ गोष्ट आहे. त्यापुढे जाऊन ते सजीव तांत्रिकदृष्ट्या विकसीत होणे हे कठीण आहे व त्याहीपुढे ते अतिप्रगत स्थितीत पोचणे हे तर महामुष्कील आहे.

 सुदैवाने आपण यापैकी दुसरा टप्पा बऱ्यापैकी गाठला आहे. अर्थात यापुढेही आपण आपसातल्या अणुयुद्धाने स्व-संहार करू शकतो, किंवा एखादी नैसर्गिक आपत्ती ( १०+ रिश्टर स्केलचा भूकंप, super volcano, asteroid strike, solar flares, gamma ray burst अथवा - माझं आवडतं - कृष्णविवर) आपला विनाश घडवू शकते. यातून गाळणी होऊन पुढे गेलेल्या जीवसृष्टी फारच कमी असतील व त्या या अफाट अंतराळात एवढ्या विखुरल्या गेल्या असतील की एकमेकांशी संपर्क साधला जाणें आता अशक्यप्राय झाले असेल.

3. अनेक अतिप्रगत जीवसृष्टीनां आपल्याकडे लक्ष देण्याची गरज भासली नसेल. उदाहरणार्थ, समृध्दी महामार्गावरून ताशी २०० किलोमीटर वेगाने जाणाऱ्या कारड्रायव्हरचे रस्त्याच्या कडेला असलेल्या एखाद्या वारुळातील मुंग्यांकडे लक्ष तरी जाईल का?

४. कदाचित एखाद्या प्रगत सृष्टीने काही हजार वर्षांपुर्वी पृथ्वीला भेट दिली असेलही, पण तेव्हाच्या प्राणीमात्रांनां ते समजलंही नसेल. आधीच्या उदाहरणातील कार ड्रायव्हर खाली उतरून मुंग्यांशी बोलू लागला तर त्यांना ते समजेल का?

५. कदाचित इतर जीवसृष्टी असा संपर्क साधण्याच्या विरुद्ध असाव्यात. उगाच आपल्यापेक्षा अधिक प्रगत सृष्टीचे आपल्याकडे लक्ष वेधले जाऊन ते आक्रमण करायचे! स्टीफन हॉकिंग यांनीही - आपण संदेश पाठवू नये, ते आपल्यालाच धोकादायक ठरू शकते - असा इशारा दिला होता. 

एकूणच काय, तर ज्या दिवशी पृथ्वीव्यतिरीक्त इतरत्र जीवसृष्टी अस्तित्वात आहे (अथवा नाही!) याचा खात्रीशीर पुरावा मिळेल तो मानवी इतिहासातील सर्वात क्रांतीकारी दिवस असेल.

The Chinese Room

Most of us are familiar with, or at least aware of, the Turing Test. Simply stated, a computer program is said to have passed this Test if a person interacting with it cannot determine if he/she is conversing with a human or a machine. 
Recently, I came across a more intriguing test: The Chinese Room. Consider this: There is a closed room, which has a computer running a software program. We, humans, interact with the program only through a input/output terminal. We input questions or sentences in English, the computer program analyzes them, creates its answers/responses, converts them to Chinese and sends to us through output terminal. If the program is really good, we will not know if we are conversing with a computer or a Chinese person in the room. The machine passes Turing Test.
Now, suppose there is a person in the room equipped with the printed version of the same program. He does not understand Chinese. Again, we pass on questions to him through input. Using instructions from program, the person converts answers to Chinese symbols and gives them out through the output. Again, this setup would pass the Turing test... And yet, the fact remains that the person doesn't know Chinese at all, and all he is doing is converting symbols, the same task that the software program did before. 
This thought experiment raises several interesting questions: In this scenario, can the program be considered to have same mind as that of the person in the room? Does the program or the non-Chinese speaking person 'understand' the conversation, as we humans would do? This is similar to the question that Garry Kasparov has repeatedly asked about Deep Blue. The supercomputer may have defeated the Grandmaster, but does it 'understand' Chess?

Einstein vs Quantum physicists

Would the Moon exist if there was no one to see it? 

Would a falling tree make a sound if there was no one to hear it? 

Does reality have a separate existence or does it require presence of an observer? 

Einstein believed that the Moon would still exist and the falling tree would still make a sound regardless of whether there was anyone around. 

Quantum physicists disagree. According to them, reality has no separate existence and it is only a manifestation of measurement by an observer.
